Being a writing ambassador at Abbey Hey is a proud and meaningful role that helps promote a love for writing across the whole school community! Writing ambassadors are responsible for checking through pupils’ books and completing a checklist to ensure that writing meets our school expectations.
They are trained to identify the RAFT (Reason, Audience, Features and Tone) in pieces of writing and discuss how effectively each element is used. They work with Miss O’Donnell and Mr Buckley to help select excellent examples of writing that can be celebrated and shared with the school community.
Part of their role involves leading whole-school assemblies, where they talk about their role and responsibilities and share examples of different careers children may wish to pursue if they have a passion for writing. During the school’s Curriculum Open Evening, writing ambassadors help promote writing to parents, carers, and visitors by explaining their role and celebrating pupils’ work.
They also take part in pupil subject leader conferencing meetings on Fridays, where they give children the chance to share writing they are proud of and gather ideas on how writing lessons can be even more fun and effective. As part of these sessions, they ask group questions like what genres pupils enjoy most and what their favourite part of the writing process is. Through all these activities, writing ambassadors play a key role in making writing exciting, meaningful, and enjoyable for everyone in the school.
